About JTL
JTL is a national apprenticeship provider specialising in the electrical and plumbing sectors, supporting thousands of apprentices and working with employers across England and Wales. We are proud to be an Ofsted ‘Good’ provider and a registered charity, reinvesting in our apprentices, staff and training facilities.
Our apprentices are at the heart of everything we do. We work closely with employers to develop the next generation of skilled tradespeople, providing high-quality training, support and guidance throughout the apprenticeship journey.
About the role
This is a varied, hands-on opportunity for an experienced electrical professional who wants to use their technical knowledge and practical skills to support the development of the next generation.
As a Workshop Instructor, you will play an important role in supporting the effective delivery of training within JTL’s centres. You will help ensure electrical and/or plumbing workshops, tools, equipment and resources are safe, well maintained and ready for practical learning, while working closely with Tutors and other delivery colleagues to support high-quality workshop activity.
Alongside your workshop responsibilities, you will support and, where appropriately qualified and competent, contribute to apprenticeship training, industry short courses and assessment preparation. This may include practical demonstrations, one-to-one and group coaching, technical training and preparation for industry assessments such as AM2S. All delivery follows JTL’s standardised curriculum, lesson plans, schemes of work and learning resources.
This role would suit someone who enjoys sharing their trade knowledge, helping others develop practical skills and working in a training environment, but who may not necessarily be looking for a full-time Tutor role.
Key responsibilities
You will:
Prepare and maintain electrical and/or plumbing workshops, tools, equipment and materials so they are safe and ready for teaching and practical activity.
Provide technical and practical support to Tutors and other colleagues during workshop sessions.
Maintain workshop stock, equipment inventories, test instruments and specialist equipment, including required checks and calibration.
Promote safe working practices and maintain relevant workshop health and safety and COSHH records.
Support apprentices and learners to develop practical skills through demonstrations, coaching and guided activities.
Support and, where appropriately qualified and competent, deliver elements of apprenticeship, industry short courses and technical training using JTL’s standardised curriculum and learning resources.
Deliver assessment preparation and refresher activity where required, which may include preparation for industry assessments such as AM2S.
Provide constructive feedback and work with Tutors, Training Officers and managers to support learner progress and development.
Provide short-term electrical teaching cover on an exceptional basis where necessary, including at other JTL centres within the region, and within your occupational competence.
Maintain current technical knowledge and occupational competence through continuing professional development.
What we’re looking for
We are looking for an experienced electrician who is passionate about developing others and helping them succeed.
You will bring:
Level 2 and Level 3 Technical Certificates in Electrical Installation, or equivalent.
A current qualification demonstrating knowledge and understanding of BS 7671 Requirements for Electrical Installations.
Verifiable electrical industry experience following qualification or apprenticeship.
Practical experience of working with electrical tools, equipment and safe working practices.
Experience of supporting, coaching, instructing or demonstrating practical skills to others.
Strong communication skills and the ability to explain technical information clearly.
Good organisational and IT skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a wider team.
A full driving licence and access to a vehicle, with flexibility to support electrical and/or plumbing workshops and electrical training activity as required.
It would be beneficial if you also have:
Level 3 Award in Education and Training, or equivalent.
Level 3 TAQA/A1/D32/D33 or equivalent assessor qualification.
Level 3 Inspection and Testing qualification.
Experience of delivering electrical training, apprenticeship delivery or AM2S preparation.
Current First Aid qualification.
IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent.
ECS card or equivalent.
Experience of using digital learning platforms or e-learning resources.
You do not need to hold all of the desirable teaching and assessment qualifications before joining JTL. We are particularly interested in candidates with strong occupational competence, practical skills and an enthusiasm for helping others learn and develop. The approved JD treats these teaching, assessment and additional technical qualifications as desirable rather than essential.
Why join JTL?
As part of our team, you’ll play a key role in supporting apprentices and learners to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours needed for successful careers within the electrical industry, working in an organisation that values quality, professional standards and continuous improvement.
We offer:
25 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays, with additional days for long service and a Christmas shutdown
Generous pension scheme with matched contributions
Life assurance and occupational sick pay
Optional private healthcare and regular health checks
Access to an Employee Assistance Programme for you and your family
CPD support, including funding for professional qualifications and ongoing training
A supportive, collaborative and values-driven working environment, plus much more…
Safeguarding and inclusion
JTL is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people and expects all its employees to share this commitment in conjunction with the requirements of the Prevent Duty and the positive promotion of modern British values.
